MicroWorld - ‘Student Raped’ email Forms The Basis of New Virus. - 30 Jan. 2006

Lure, entice, threaten, shock or evoke concern! Try every trick in trade to get the user to open the mail and download the attachment. That seems to be the motto of virus writers of late. This new one comes as a ‘wanted’ ad in search of a rapist on the run. Any user with the right social sense might just be tempted to open the mail in order to help them find the culprit. Once downloaded, the attachment will allow hackers to molest your computer by creating a security hole!

The Troj/Stinx-N Trojan horse spreads through spam emails. The subject lines found are "Campus Student Raped" "CCTV still of Rapist" and "Do you recognize this person?" The body of the message talks about sexual assault of a university student, with graphic descriptions of the culprit. If you find him, you are told to inform the authorities immediately. The attachments containing the trojan are "Suspects Photo.exe", "suspect image.exe", "CCTVstill.exe", "CCTV-footage.exe", and "suspicious photo.exe"

If you run the attached file, this Trojan will create a passage for the intruder to sneak in. “Troj/Stinx-N targets the well meaning people. Completely hijacked by the gravity of the message, one might just open the mail and download the exe. So far this Trojan has spread only in the universities of North America and United Kingdom, but it just might get out of hand and spread wider. We strongly urge our users to update their software and watch out for our timely threat alerts” Says Aneesh Palival, Security Analyst, MicroWorld Technologies.

MicroWorld’s solutions eScan and MailScan are highly powerful and extremely efficient in fighting the online malice. Working on a patent pending technology called MWL (MicroWorld Winsock Layer), they protect users from Virus, Spyware, Adware, Malware, Keyloggers, Hackers, Spammers, phishing, Privacy related issues, Objectionable Content and many more. Besides the hourly update system for newer threats, MicroWorld also employs a sophisticated heuristic scanning to foresee even the future threats.
