Version 2.8
| VIEWTCP - FREE utility to provide detailed
listings of TCP and UDP endpoints, along with associated
processes. |
|
VIEWTCP is a network monitoring
tool that examines TCP/IP activity on your Windows-based
systems. This free utility lists all TCP and UDP
endpoints on your PC, including the remote address
(along with Domain name of the remote address) and
state of TCP connections. With this utility, users
can also determine which process has binded on to
various ports on your PC and the remote network
addresses suspicious applications are accessing.
VIEWTCP, in addition to the above, details the process
which is associated with a TCP/IP address and port.
The process name feature simplifies the task of
determining what application is responsible for
specific connections and activity. Along with the
process name, the responsibility of the process
and its developers are also given.
Most worms today act like mail, proxy and spam relays,
thereby illegally using your system for sending
out Spams or by acting like hidden proxies. The
same could also be used by spyware to steal information
from your machine and sending it to remote users.
For example, the original Sobig worm, introduced
in January 2003 spread a proxy server trojan. It
was one of the most successful worms and thousands
of proxy servers were surreptitiously installed
on computers worldwide. The purpose of this proxy
network was to serve spammers - giving them a way
to hide their true IP addresses while they spew
spam all over the globe.
Worms like Sobig took advantage of the fact that
there was no easy and simple way for users to determine
connections made out from their computers to remote
machines. Users could only see that their Internet
was slowing down, but beyond this, there was little
in the way of graphical representation to show the
Internet traffic!
VIEWTCP does exactly this - it shows all the processes
running on your system and also the communications
that these processes have with external entities.

VIEWTCP monitors TCP /IP network activity on Windows
95/98, Windows NT/2000/XP and Windows 2003 systems. |
Windows OS gives a simple utility called "NetStat"
to determine the open connections at any point of time. But there
are two major disadvantages of Netstat.
(a) The view given by Netstat is static, means that you have got to
keep running it over and over again to see the various connections
those are created and destroyed.
(b) Netstat does not give the name of the process associated with
a specific connection. |
